Overwhelmed during a trip to her birthplace, Bolis wrote a letter to his mother. This letter became the starting point for his first solo album. He now presents that album, and the letter, live. Bolis Pupul's sound leaves nothing to chance. Born in Belgium as the son of a Chinese mother and Belgian father, Bolis Pupul also searches for the conversation between his Eastern and Western roots in his music. Beyond his identity, his music is also a fusion of cultures. He mixes elevated electronica - think early Mr Fingers-like techno and the exuberant man-machine minimalism of Yellow Magic Orchestra - with the warm and wonky naivety of Belgian New Beat. Bolis Pupul's unique sound is playful, emotional, relentless and tender at the same time.

The newly renovated Terarken room will welcome multiple concerts during this edition of Abrupt. The first one being a night filled with Jazz-Fusion, welcoming the legendary Chief Adjuah (fka Christian Scott) & Moses Yoofee Trio.

Maxime Denuc will perform a live organ concert at the iconic Cathedral of St. Michael & St. Gudula. Known for his innovative compositions and mastery of the organ, Denuc's performance promises to be a unique and immersive experience.

CATHEDRAL

The Cathedral of St. Michael and St. Gudula in Brussels is a Gothic masterpiece with origins dating back to the 9th century. Its twin towers, intricate sculptures, and stunning stained glass windows, particularly by Bernard van Orley, highlight its architectural grandeur. Inside, the cathedral features an impressive organ built by Gerhard Grenzing. This landmark will be the scene for a unique organ concert by Belgian composer Maxime Denuc.

Part of the concert series Bozar and Reset started back in May, with past performances by Upsammy and Lee Gamble, this edition will feature two acts that heavily incorporate acoustic piano in their works. Detroit born producer and composer Laurel Halo will present her album “Atlas“ live, accompanied by cellist Leila Bordreuil. Radio Hito’s pensive compositions get stripped down to the bare elements while still retaining the solemn power of truth.

BOTANIQUE

Le Botanique is a cultural centre dedicated to live music and art exhibitions. Inaugurated in 1829 as a national botanic garden, le Botanique became the cultural centre for the French Community of Belgium on the 23rd of January 1984 and nowadays is one of Belgium’s most visited and active cultural centres.
Botanique is passionate about discovering new music and helping emerging artists launch their career. With on average 300 concerts, 10 exhibitions and 100 residencies a year, they aim to create space for creativity and artistic development.

On Saturday we’re exploring the realm of live visual and sonic experimentation in Terarken. Hyperdub label boss Kode9 presents his 2022 album “Escapology” live. The LP was the soundtrack to "Astro-Darien", a fictional video game that deploys science fiction to critique colonial history, and features some of the producer's most paradigm-shifting material to date, burning pixelated Playstation-era imagery into asymmetric club sounds. Mika Oki and SKY H1 combine forces again to present an audiovisual show titled ‘Chromaesthesia’. The AV show is a sound and visual experience where music and colours are inextricably tied to one another. The performance invites us to experience the music on a molecular level and see each frequency as a pigment of color and as a projection of our inner space.
